Simon’s Quest

Sure, I know that blogs about personal details are pretty tepid, but I’m feeling kinda blue today. Oooh, maybe it’s because Zooey Deschanel got engaged to that singer dude from Death Cab for Cutie. Of all the (indie-rock) bands and singers, Zooey! *cry*

Ahahaha! But no, it seems most of my friends would consider me a “metal guy”. That is, my primary influences in music were heavy metal and this is the style in which I learned to first play. What made them come to that conclusion? My intricate alternate string-skipping picking? The liquid-smooth legato runs?

But alas, it is not so! The first auditory kiss that touched me actually came from the original Nintendo Entertainment System! Though I’ve had epic, wandering musical ideas promulgating my imagination as far back as I can remember, everything changed forever when I went over to my neighbor’s house at the ripe age of 3 or so, and played Castlevania II (aptly named Simon’s Quest!). So yeah, video game music brainwashed me first, which is all at once strange, depressing, and infuriatingly charming.

But let me summarize. I would chart my musical influences in the following order:

Castlevania II/Mega Man 3 —> Queen —> Megadeth/Guns N’ Roses —> Cacophony/Blind Guardian —> Emperor —> Zooey Deschanel

As you can see, my tastes became progressively sophisticated over the years, leaping from fantastically flamboyant arena rock to proto-fascist black metal to the amateur soul-singing of second-tier Hollywood babe, Zooey D. What a long strange trip it’s been!

Anyhow, whenever I hear this music, it’s 1988 all over again and all my problems of today become my parents’ problems.
